These are my "Church" Clothes
An attitude of rebellion or a believers stance on the internal not the external.
Over the years people have come up to me wearing a t-shirt and blue jeans saying "these are my church clothes" followed by the argument that God looks on the interior opposed to the exterior. Which that argument is true but there is just something about the attitude and that statement that just smacks of spiritual immaturity and rebellion. You are probably thinking that’s harsh criticism coming from a guy who plays heavy metal music wearing a t-shirt and camo shorts on stage all in the name of Jesus.
Again, that would be a true assessment but here is the difference. My stage clothes are not worn anywhere else but on stage because they are set apart from the rest of my wardrobe for that purpose. When on stage every aspect about my person is selected special for Him, from my shirt to my shoes.
If your life is anything like mine, church day is a struggle to just to get everyone dressed. Sometimes not a lot of thought (if any) is put in to our worship attire due to circumstances. No doubt this will ruffle a lot of feathers but let’s change the scenario and see how you feel.
When you went on your first date with your significant other, did you just throw on whatever you had in the closet? Or did you decide to wear certain clothes that complimented your features or just made you look better and feel better? What if you were invited to the White House or to meet your favorite celebrity? Now some readers may be naturally beautiful and look good in a potato sack but people like myself have to be more selective and make more effort.
The same speaks and applies to your spiritual wardrobe. God may not have to look so deep into our person because our personal relationship with God may have as much lack of thought as our worship attire. Your internal intent is clearly reflected in your external demeanor and appearance.
Romans 12:1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship. NASB Translation
The next time you get dressed for church take a moment and look in the mirror at what you are wearing. Your worship experience is your date with God. It is a special time set aside for your worship of Him. Shouldn't you dress for the occasion by presenting your best for Him? He died for our sins and He deserves it.
The issue we are wrestling with here is intent. When selecting our attire to go to church, what is our purpose of choosing those clothes? Are we making a statement and to whom are we making it? Is our worship more about us and how we feel or is it about pleasing Him?
Jesus wore the common clothes of the people. There is no doubt in my mind though that when He went to the synagogue, He was wearing His best robe, not the one He used for carpentry. By no means is there any implication here that every man should go buy a suit or every woman should go buy a dress. By all means, if jeans are all you have - wear jeans - but wear your best jeans. Our worship is about Him; giving Him praise, glory and honor, not us.
My intent here is not to judge but to provide some spiritual resistance so you can grow in strength as a believer. You don't have to agree with this article. I could be wrong, but it’s my perspective from the bottom end.
